Hi Linda, this is Kelly with Dyson. The V7 Motorhead, and all of our cord-free machines, feature a light touch trigger which does need to be held down, in order to power the machine. This ensures that power is only being used when the trigger is pulled, rather than wasted when moving from room to room. Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
