“Apparently, the Dyson stick vacuums all have to have their triggers held in the "On" position for the entire time they are being used. Is this true? This would be a deal breaker for my wife and anyone else with arthritis in their hands.”

That's correct, you have to hold it. I was some what disappointed too, but it is an extremely easy machine to use. Didn't even think about it after a while because of the ease of no cord having to be plugged in and unplugged.
