Hello Harp, this is Kelly with Dyson. The Dyson V8 Animal can be used on carpeting, area rugs and bare floors. That being said, it does have a spinning brush bar that cannot be disabled. There is a soft roller cleaner head available for purchase separately, which was engineered specifically for hard flooring. However, the included tools work great on my hardwood floor - which is the primary floor I use with this vacuum. It’s especially great for cleaning the crumbs left behind after my children eat.
