It doesn't normally make much noise at all. It does have a fan, of course, but it will only kick on audibly when needed to cool the system.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Just bought one today, fan is really loud and laptop heats up pretty fast. I can still hear the fan when videos are playing. So disappointed. Going to return it tomorrow.

The first night we had the laptop, the fan curve was less than ideal. It went from silent to way too loud after watching a YouTube video. If you aren't familiar with a fan curve, it essentially tells the computer how fast to spin the cooling fan at certain temps. I checked into the issue online and found a suggestion to update the BIOS. After doing that, we haven't experienced the same fan speed issue nor has the computer felt warm to the touch. There might be the occasional brief spin up, but most laptops do this from time to time. Keep in mind that this laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card, so gaming isn't an optimal use for this computer and you might experience significant noise regardless of the BIOS update, fan curve setting in HP Coolsense, or in-game settings. YMMV, but after updating the BIOS, even with the standard fan curve setting, we've been much happier with the purchase.
