“My Mac is connected to the printer via WiFi and software is current. I can successfully execute a scan if driving from my Mac using Epson apps. If I try to scan using the printer's control panel, fail. The printer only shows USB connection as an option.”

Did you connect the PRINTER to your WIFI? It doesn't matter if your computer is connected to the printer. It's weird, especially since Epson didn't bother to include a part, i.e., USB connection that probably costs less than $50, yet the printer panel shows that as an option. You have to connect your WIFI FROM the printer panel.
