“Can this projector actually connect to an external speaker through Bluetooth? I'm not sure since I saw some reviewers complain that they couldn't connect to an external speaker using such a way.”

Hello Speaker. Yes, you can connect an external Bluetooth speaker only with the included Android TV streaming device. If you plan to use a different video device with the projector, please ensure it includes Bluetooth functionality to connect your speaker separately. Regards, Kevin - The Epson Team.
