Yes and No. We are using a regular pull-down screen (and it works fine) but if we had the short throw screen which cost north of $1,200 the picture would be vivid and crisp. The only issue with a regular screen is that the screen is not 100% flat verticle so, the screen waves are noticeable. Again, it is not a big deal to us and your eyes adjust. Hope this helps. P.S. we tried to purchase a short throw screen online from what we thought was a reputable seller in New York and we got scammed. It was a fake website and we had to dispute it with our insurance. They were selling it for $800.
