“Does this unit allow you to adjust brightness? How does it handle 35mm slides that are washed out or under exposed? Can it dim the backlight to allow for this type image to be better captured?”

This scanner has the "ICE" feature when enabled it does a pretty good job of color correction and dust or spec removal. For serious under or overexposures you'll need another program. If they are washed out or underexposed you might be out of luck restoring them anyway.
