“Is the glass you place the image on recessed? I need to scan large art pieces and then patchwork the scans together, I have found that a recessed bed creates some bad lighting that's difficult to edit out in photoshop.”

Yes, it's recessed maybe 1/8 inch. If your "art pieces" are not photographs, you might consider an overhead scanner such as the CZUR line. They are actually overhead cameras but will do up to A4 size which you can stitch together.
