I mounted it from my rear view mirror using a device made by a company called blendmount. It hangs just below my rearview mirror.

It comes with an incredible windshield mount and that works very well! I mounted it on my windshield just above my car's navigation system. You can also buy a kit to wire the car internally.

Best place I have found is low on the windshield just above wipers. Windshield mount is very sturdy with great hold. If you want to clean your windshield just slide it off the magnetic mount, suction cup stays on windshield. It can be removed easily if required with the detector still attached.

It can be mounted high or low on the windshield. It can also be hardwired as well as using the adapter. 
It connects via magnet and is very easy to remove and place back if you want to put it somewhere safe while your parked in a 
questionable area.
