“Is there a way to keep the heart rate monitor always on?”

• yes, if you choose the right clock face out of the bunch that has all the stats and change the settings to have the watch always on, it will show all the time. It does die faster on this setting but it's good to have it without flicking wrist back and fourth to turn it on.
