I never do. Live in WI, so we install in June and remove in September. We only leave the screened window open about 6 inches.

I was concerned about the same thing. I ended up fixing a screen over the exterior vent opening for bugs and debris coming in. I then sealed the exhaust port to the window insert with silicone. I then bought a dryer vent cover and used silicone and double sided tape to prevent the water from entering exhaust port. Seems to be working good.
