• I didn't use any screw when I installed mine, although the kit does come with screws. It depends on how trusting you are of your mechanical ability.

• It is a fairly large window unit, but so far ours is supported by the window frame only. If you live in a second or higher floor I'd recommend some kind of brackets of possible. You would not want the thing crashing down on someone's head or anything.
