Technically , I guess it could sit inside, if your opening is large enough. I think that defeats one of the purposes of the trim kit though. The trim kit is suppose to sit on the outside as to cover up the whole/opening that the microwave goes into, making your microwave to look like a "built in" appliance.

Please adhere to the recommended cutout size of 24-3/4 to 25 inches wide, 16-3/4 to 17 inches tall, and 20+ inches deep. ~Ashton
