“Confused - some answers say the trim kit is required, others say optional. Which is it? If optional, how can it be installed without the exhaust duct which is part of the trim kit? Frigidaire confirmed it is optional, but couldn't answer all my questions.”

This microwave can be used on a counter as well as a built in. The trim kit is optional. It will sit in an enclosure that is larger with extra room for the air to move around it, but it will just look like it was set in the cabinet without the trim kit. The trim kit finishes the front so that the opening is covered around the front of the unit. The tray has skids that lift the unit up to give it some space underneath to allow air from the internal blower to escape. Trim kit is very expensive for what you get.
