• Yes, you can modify to dash. I am thinking about doing that to my truck. I have it hard wired ( which I recommend doing )

• My only concern would be that the unit still needs to connect with the GPS satellites. That means you'll probably have to mount it fairly high and build the enclosure with something that won't block the signals. There's also no provision for plugging in an external speaker.
