• The Bluetooth connection to a smartphone is needed only to receive traffic alerts and for hands free phone calls. The navigation feature works without the Bluetooth connection. Thanks, James

• You do not need a phone for the garmin however it can be used as a hands free device, it also can display the alerts from your phone and read your text messages

• No, you do not need to use your phone with the unit. You would connect your phone to be able to use hands free calling for example.
