Hi Paul - Thanks for reaching out to us regarding microwave operating sounds. We suggest to make sure the microwave is level (installed on flat surface). Make sure the turntable is properly installed. Microwaves need adequate air clearance on each side, the rear and the top to function properly. This allows good circulation for the intake and discharge air vents. Allow 3" of clearance on both sides and the top and 1" clearance in the rear. See MICROWAVE AIR CLEARANCE - COUNTERTOP ONLY MODELS: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=21668 - Also, we suggest to view the following links- NORMAL OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS FOR A MICROWAVE: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=15900 - MICROWAVE - ARCING OR MAKING SOUNDS: https://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=17875 - Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com - Sue
