• It definitely has to be mounted over your range. There are other types that you can just place on your countertop.

• Hello TG - Thank you for this thoughtful question. We know a lot of people are also wondering this. An over-the-range model cannot be used by sitting directly on the counter. The fan underneath will continue to operate so it must be hung from a cabinet, but not necessarily over a cooktop. We hope this helps. Keep in touch! - John@GEA
