Hi B- Thanks for choosing GE! A duct cover kit is not required with 8' ceiling. The supplied duct cover fits 7'-4" to 9'-0" ceiling heights. No you do not need an extension. The one that comes with the unit is sufficient. I had problems though with the company that does the installation for Best Buy. The worst experience. Good luck if you use them for the install.
