Hi SD, thanks so much for your question! It is common for both chest and upright freezers to feel warm (sometimes even hot to the touch) on the sides. Chest freezers have the condenser wrapped around the outside of the case. - The outside white surface is actually acting as the condenser to remove heat from the inside. If the compressor is not running, the sides may feel cool at times - this is normal. - It is important to allow proper air circulation around freezers. Most Upright and Chest freezers require 3" on the top and all sides. We would recommend that you consult the freezer Owner's Manual or Installation Instructions for the proper clearances for your model. We hope that this helps and that you're staying safe. -Michael
