I put a plastic mat underneath it, I had the same worry as you. However, after running it for 2 days while my new AC was being installed, I was happily surprised to see that only a tiny bit of water had collected. After we were done using it, we took it outside to empty it and just a tiny bit dribbled out. Most of it evaporates.

Do not place the air conditioner on an unstable or raised surface. You can put it on a boot tray as long as the above requirements can be met. Thanks for checking. Olga@GEA
