The sensors have a scale build-up on them. You must clean it weekly

The reason might be that over time you might get dust/dirt from the air inside the machine or from the constant opening of the bin. As it produces ice and drops to bin, it recycles the water, from melted ice, which can carry dust back into the reservoir underneath the bin. I'm sure they are covering their end by asking you to clean regularly, so you produce clean ice.
