A:AnswerThere is an app you can use to set a schedule. We schedule ours to turn off after dinner, then have it turn on early in the morning so that there's plenty of fresh ice when we wake up.
A:AnswerThere are a couple of versions of the Opal out there. I just picked up the Opal 2.0 which is an improved version and seems to work quite well. One way you can differentiate the units is the 2.0 version has touch button sensors on the front for the power, light and cleaning cycle. If you are really concerned you can get the extended warranty through Best buy. Although I have not used the extended warranty on this unit I have used it on my Samsung refrigerator's ice maker and found the service to be quite good.
A:AnswerHere are the major differences:
- The casing corners are now rounded
- The circle LED indicator has been replaced by "touch-sensitive" buttons on the front, as well as distinct word labels stating what the appliance is doing. This includes replacing the rear slider switch for cleaning with touch-button functionality in the front
- The plastic ice bin no longer has holes along the rear-bottom; a spring-loaded hole has been added that opens only when the bin is slid all the way into the appliance, thereby preventing drips when fully removing the bin
- Overall, the appliance does appear quieter, though that's more subjective
- Biggy: when draining the water while cleaning, it completely dumps in about 30 seconds. Previous units took minutes to do this.
I hope this helps!
A:AnswerI contacted the Opal Service Techs at 866-907-6718 to inquire about the same issue and these are the instructions they sent me via email. I hope this information is helpful if you are experiencing this issue.
“Thank you for contacting us regarding your Opal Nugget Ice Maker!
If the water well is filled to the upper fill line and no ice is being produced, please perform this simple test:
1. Please start the Opal and switch to cleaning mode. Don't forget to detach the side tank.
2. Remove the screen/filter at the bottom corner of the reservoir, exposing the small white rubber inlet used for water circulation.
3. Make certain that the Opal is not connected to the phone app and that the water well is filled to the upper fill line with distilled water.
4. Remove the ice bin and press the button to see if the Opal pumps water. This could take up to 5 minutes to start.
5. Plug the small inlet with your finger for 10-15 seconds to create a vacuum within the pump/circulation system.
6. Release the plug and wait a minute or until you see water movement.
7. If you do not see a change, you may want to repeat these steps a couple of times.
8. Please reply to this email and advise what you see...water is flowing down the back of the trough or there is no water movement at all.
9. If you see water movement, please switch to ice mode and run for 30 minutes.
Please reply directly to this email with the results. To serve you and others in a timely manner, your ticket will be closed after 5 days if we receive no response.
Thank you,

A:AnswerWe have this same problem. We have had ours for about 4 months. It worked great for a few months and we never ran out of ice. Now it gets about a quarter of the way full and goes into defrost most. Huge pain!
A:AnswerThough it is kind of a pain, cleaning it weekly like the manual recommends really keeps the motor running smoother and the fan more quiet. When ours starts making louder noise, a thorough cleaning quiets it down. The machine will also last much much longer by doing the cleaning regularly.
A:AnswerLeave it plugged in. Mine did this & I thought it was broken, even called customer service. After just leaving it plugged in about 2-3 hours...... it started out of nowhere
A:AnswerNo. You absolutely do not have to use the drip tray. For me, it is more of a convenient place to rest the scoop and catch a nugget or 2 that might fall.
A:AnswerIt is always on and starts making ice as soon as the ice level in the storage container drops. Pretty much every time you get ice out of the machine and close the bin it starts making ice to replace the used portion. I also haven't heard the machine turn on and make ice randomly from lack of use causing the ice to melt in the bin.
A:AnswerUnplug ice maker. Remove water filter, if present and replace screened intake cap. Drain ice maker. Create solution of five cups of water and one teaspoon household bleach. Pour solution into water reservoir, up to fill line. Plug ice maker in and hold the Clean button for 3 seconds to start cleaning process. When water stops and cleaning light turns off, drain ice maker. Add plain water to fill line and repeat steps for initiating cleaning. Repeat using plain water 2 to 3 more times. When complete drain remaining water from ice maker.
A:AnswerIt would barely fit lengthwise (17.5"), you would not be able to use the tray that slides under the ice maker. The ice maker isn't the quietest by any means but the constant hum it makes while producing ice is easily drowned out. The ice maker can also be put on schedule to make ice through the app and can be easily turned off.
A:AnswerIt will take several hours to completely fill the ice bin. I leave mine ON or the Power On 24/7, any ice that melts is recirculated, and it continues to make new ice until the bin is full. It has an automatic sensor that tells it the bin is full. Hope this helps.
