If you don't use the side tank, you must add water to the reservoir under the ice bin. This gets very tedious and bothersome.

Both sides of the machine are finished and look similar, and the reservoir just sits beside the main unit (on either side) with a hose hookup in the back. You do not have to have the extra tank. Without the tank, you pull the ice drawer out and fill inside the machine to the water marks inside, just like the original opal unit if you are familiar with that model.

To fill the water, you would remove the ice tray and fill with water under the tray. This is the same location the water is collected as the ice melts slowly over time. It is also the same location which gets filled up from the reservoir in order to make ice. The reservoir is only there to make your life easier.
