Though it is kind of a pain, cleaning it weekly like the manual recommends really keeps the motor running smoother and the fan more quiet. When ours starts making louder noise, a thorough cleaning quiets it down. The machine will also last much much longer by doing the cleaning regularly.

This seems to be a common problem, so hopefully it's not a manufacturing defect that shortens the lifespan of the product. I'd heard about this before buying it, so I bought the extended warranty just in case.
