Hi SDW- While we strongly recommend not using an extension cord, the interior light may flicker when the oven is in use if installed with an extension cord. Cooking times may also be longer. The microwave should be plugged into its own properly grounded, dedicated electrical outlet to prevent the flickering of the lights, blowing of a fuse or tripping of a circuit breaker. See the following link- http://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=18836 - A qualified service technician is required for an accurate diagnosis. For safety reasons, we offer no do-it-yourself repair advice on microwave ovens due to high voltage (capacitor hold a high voltage charge even after it has been unplugged). If interested you can contact GE Appliance Service at 1-800-432-2737 for assistance or conveniently schedule an appointment online: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/service/ - Due to age, you may want to considering a replacement. The current model is our GE Profile™ Series 1.1 Cu. Ft. Countertop Microwave Oven PEM31SFSS. Keep in touch! SUE@GEA
