I have the same reaction as you do. Mine don't light up either and it is impossible to see the buttons in a dim light. What a disappointment. I would have returned it except we have custom cabinets in the kitchen and this was supposed to be a direct replacement for the older model. However, the overall size is different by 1/4 inch and the screw holes for hanging are a different pattern, requiring new drill holes in the cabinet. Overall, the unit feels cheap, is much more expensive than others and I am less than impressed by it (including the non-light issue). Wish I could have had better news.......
