Is the power cord just for charging the Chromecast device, or does it need to be plugged in for power to operate? null

CCA device has NO battery. It only works when fed by 5volt USB. It also only works when logged onto wifi. An external USB battery or a speaker with a USB port would run it untethered to the wall.

Has to be plugged in. It does not have an internal battery. For portability, you may try plugging it into a portable battery charger for phones. :)

you don't charge any type of Chromecast. the power cord (or Micro USB to USB cable) is only used to supply power for the Chromecast to actually operate. if you want, you can just connect the USB side into an open USB port on the back of your TV, those usually have power when the TV is on and the shorter cable looks a lot neater...

It must remain plugged in. There is no battery to speak of. My thoughts are getting a portable speaker with a usb charging port and plugging the chromecast into it.

Bam, now you have a portable wifi chromecast speaker. Only thing is, you still need to have your chromecast within range of your wifi.
