Personally I use this in connection with my Sonos Play 5 set up. It enables my guest to cast their music/playlist from their smart phone to the Sonos. Its a great hit every party! But really this item is more geared towards use with speakers that do not have bluetooth connectivity so you can cast your music from your smart phone to said speaker.

When you bluetooth a smartphone to a speaker, you still get all the audio notifications such as texts and alerts. Chromecast filters the sound going through it to only play the music or streaming service you want. Also, multiple chromecasts can give you multi-room audio whereas your phone can only bluetooth to one system at a time.

The chromecast can be controlled by your cell phone, ipad, or computer. The chromecast manages the data exchange so you cell phone does not have to.
