question i have is whether or not the $20 credit has to be explicity used for a movie or can you use the credit for books, software, etc. from the Google Play store.

The $20 Google Play credit can be used on anything in the Google Play Store, at least from my own experience. I used the $20 credit to purchase a few songs and a movie. Just a little more information for you: I had some trouble receiving the $20 Google Play credit. After buying the product from Best Buy, I did not receive a code in the box or via email for the $20 credit. After a week I called Google customer service first, since the code was to be used in their domain anyway. Google said they stopped offering this promotion before 2015, but Best Buy was still running a promotion for Google Play (although somehow "separate" from the expired Google offer....?). Either way, I called Best Buy customer service and they provided me with a code via phone within 2 hours. You must purchase the Chromecast from Best Buy to receive to $20 Google Play credit as of 2015, and your code will NOT be provided in the item box. Since I ordered my Chromecast on Bestbuy.com, their customer service was able to verify my purchase date, order number and contact information very easily through my online account which sped up this process. They were very helpful and knowledgable.

Basically, you get some "code" that you redeem at the chromecast/google website. This just adds $20 to your google play money account, which can be redeemed for apps, movies, books, etc.

The $20 credit is for anything in the google play store...i made this purchase twice already. You either get the credit from best buy via email or thru google once you hook up the chrome cast. But the expiration to download the credit is january 31 I believe and the credit must be used within a year. So if purchasing thru bestbuy.com i would add the credit right away to the google play account, which is usually sent to you within an hour.

I purchased my chromecast last week (jan 12th 2015) I purchased in store and it came with a plays store code on the recipt that put $20 on my play account. I used it to buy a game, a book, an app and a movie with no problems. So its for anything on play not just movies and music. You also get some other perks if you buy before jan 30th like a hulu trial for 2 weeks and google play music subscription trial. All total over $60 of free services.
