Yes. When the unit is heating your house, the display will be a reddish-orange color. When the unit is cooling your house, the display will be blue. If the system is off, the background will be a dark grey or black color, with white numbers. It will even give you an estimated time until you reach your target temperature. If your house is at 66 degrees and you set the heat to 72, it will say "estimated 52 minutes to target temperature" or something like that, depending on the size of your house (information you can add to the thermostat as well).

Everyday the nest on the app will tell you the use. Also you will know is on if color is either blue or red (cold, hot).

Create a NEST account at NEST.COM and link the thermostat to the account. You can use the NEST.COM web app or the free iPhone or Android app.

If you just want to know if the A/C or heater is on, then the app's temperature will have a blue background if cooling, an orange background if heating and a black background if neither.

If you want to know whether the thermostat power is on, it can tell you when it last communicated with the thermostat. Go to Settings (the circle with rays around its perimeter in upper right), then Technical Info.

I have unlocked the nest and gone to the rental property to set the thermostat to Display current Temo but on exiting and locking remotely it continues to display Target and not current Temp?

The Nest will send you a heads up in the app if your forced-air furnace isn't running how it should. Here's more about it:

To rephrase the question:  
Will Nest text or contact me if the AC or heat stops working?

This would be great because I have an old dog who is home alone & I don't need him suffering or dying because it's 95* + in the house.

Is there a way to se this up?

No. If your power is out and your network is on battery backup, you will not know. If you loose your network during the power outage your phone app will not connect.

Yes it will. If the power is off, it will show you the wiring diagram and say it is not getting power.

Are you meaning power to the furnace or A/C unit? If yes, I don't believe it does, but after a while of not receiving power it will notify you that it needs to power down to recharge its battery.
