The nest protect is a stand alone device only requirements are wifi and app download to set up the device.

It will require you to download the Nest app to set up, but once set up, they will act as a fire alarm and co2 monitor. I have 3 that are linked. When one goes off, they all go off. They also work in conjunction with my nest thermostat.
