We recommend placing your Nest Protect on the ceiling to monitor both smoke and carbon monoxide levels. If you’re installing on the wall, make sure Nest Protect is within 12 inches (30.5 cm) of the ceiling. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can mount on the wall, but it has to be within a foot or so of the ceiling. I wouldn't recommend putting it behind anything, as it has motion and other sensors built in that might not like that
