“If it's wifi enabled...what if the fire knock out my wireless outer first before nest pick up the "smoke"...and I am away from home? What good is this smoke detector in that case?”

Great question. The device has WiFi in order to communicate with multiple platforms like your smartphone via app notifications. So, yes, in the event that your WiFi router is the source of the fire, then nothing relying on internet connections would work. This is simply an added layer of protection to notify you if you're not home. In addition, it has other feature like weekly tests and automatic sensor checks. It will still work without internet with an audible local alarm, you just wont get a notification on your smartphone. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that fire alarms should be installed at each level, inside and outside bedrooms. Lastly, the chances of the fire taking out the wireless router before Nest Protect can sense it are pretty slim, as long as you follow the NFPA recommendations. Please try again later.Without an internet connection, this product will not be able to send you notifications, however if you are comparing to a traditional detector system - all that does is sound the alarm - if you're not there, it doesn't matter. I have these set up in my home and they work great, will notify in any room where you have one, so if you have smoke in the kitchen and you are sleeping upstairs - the upstairs unit will warn you as well as send you the warning via your smartphone.

The only alert an owner will receive should wifi connectivity be lost is thru email. Regardless of wifi connectivity lost or not the protect still operates as a smoke detector that speaks, not chirp or blare sounds, should the device detect a problem and inform you what area of your home the problem is located. What type of problem has been detected. You may not be home at the time the protect is alerted to an emergency and could be experiencing wifi issues but a family member may be and would know that there is a problem not some faulty smoke detector or battery needs changing noise.

Please try again later.Without a working WiFi connection, the Nest Protect would still be able to go off in the home like any other smoke detector, and the split spectrum smoke sensor used in the Nest Protects are able to detect signs of smoke and provide a heads up before the smoke gets too thick causing the alarm to go off.
