You can get notifications on your phone without having to pay for the subscription. The guard will chime when a door opens if the alarm is off but will announce the specific door/window if the guard is set to home & guarding or away and guarding.

Yes, you will hear nest state what door is opened only if the alarm is set for home and Guarding or away. Otherwise, you can set different chime sounds for the doors so you can distinguish each.

You have choices in that you may subscribe to have 5 days of recording, or 30 days of video , etc. the Nest cameras such as video doorbell record continuously. Without a subscription, the storage is limited to I believe 1 day. If you are away for any period of time (days) and are alerted to a break-in, you would want the video to see if you can identify the perpetrator and have a video to show police. Without subscribing, the video will be written over after 1 day. For $5 per month the ability to come home and have video to review of any problem, and to share the video is extremely valuable IMHO. The Nest system does name each sensor and report which one detected the issue. The Detect sensors on doors and windows are dual purposed. They alert if the door or window is opened, and they are also motion detectors. If someone managed entry without setting the alarm off, their motion in any room with a Nest detector would be picked up and generate a message alert on my phone. Obviously, a camera is needed to have video. The combo of Nest Video doorbell, the alarm system, and indoor camers (I have the New Nest Max Hub with the absolutely superb camera). BTW: the loud alert of the alarm system master station w keypad is LOUD. It would scare any intruder. The alert to you on your phone anywhere you happen to be is the key to reacting and you can phone police or a neighbor immediately.

Otherwise you don't really get notifications when it is unset. I haven't made the alarm go off yet or been too slow to get to my code or my dongle to know if the alarm sends a notification to my phone. Back to the door and window sensors -- You can turn on open tones though and the base station will make a DING sound when a door or window is opened. Also the sensors have a nifty little pathlight feature for when it is dark (similar to how the nest smoke alarm works).
