You need to read the product description of the device you want to control. Many work with several smart assistants such as Google assistant, Amazon's Alexa etc. Manufactures generally want their products to work with as many different assistant products as possible. Check with the manufacture's web site for the product and it should tell you what smart services it supports.

That is correct, the Google Mini will function the same way an echo dot would work with in terms of lights and the thermostat. If you had both in your home, it'd be a headache to remember which device you have in what room, but they both can work together by using similar commands. "Hey Google, turn off my lights" or "Alexa, turn off my lights".

Yes a lot of home control items are compatable with both google and echo. T P link, omotion, nest, the list is very long!!!! I am able to ask alexa to turn on lights or google mini either one at any given command works.
