All of the units can act as complete individual units separate from others or you can combine them together. In the Google home app, you can even create groups, I have a couple label Master Suite which covers my master bedroom and bathroom, living area which covers my kitchen is sitting room area and one called whole house which plays them all. They are actually quite versatile and easy to use and you can even transfer music from one location to another if you choose.
