All you need is a Wi-Fi connection, a Google account (5 mins. to sign up if you do not) and the device. Think of it like the phone voice feature with the ability to do more in the way of automation (turning on lights) Now when you get pass the Q&A level, you will need to buy more stuff to addon to your desired setup...like special light bulbs that communicates with the device if your desire is to turn on your lights with your voice
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The easiest thing to do is check out one of the demo videos which will explain the basics to your question visually. Here's one of many. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KpLHdAURGo You don't need to buy anything else especially to talk to it and have it answer questions other than connect it to the Internet over your wifi network. You'll do this connectivity step by downloading the Google Home App which is very simple. I do recommend for an extra 35.00 you pick him up Chromecast which will probably be onsale for 30.00 so you can play Youtube videos etc on your TV. Happy Holidays, ju3t1nz

As long as you have wi-fi you don't need anything else with it if you just want to play music and use it as a vocal Google search. If you want it to control things in your home such as lights or thermostat you will need accessories.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hey Frannie, The Google Home can be used for a lot more than just answering questions. Its great at doing that, but thats really just the tip of the iceberg. I use mine to give me weather and news updates. I also use it to control a number of smart appliances and gadgets around my home. For example, I've got a number of Phillips Hue lights around my apartment that can be controlled by the Google Home. Ex. I can say "Hey Google, turn off my bedroom light." and it will turn off that light. Obviously for this functionality you'd need to have those particular lights, but thats just one example. You don't need any additional items for the basic functionality, but I think the Google Home really shines when you have other 'smart' gadgets in your home that you let it control. Additionally, sometime in December Google is going to open up the Google Home's api to outside developers and I would expect the functionality of the product to increase significantly in the coming months. Hope this helps!
