Yes. The mobile app to program and control remotely needs access to your home's WiFi. It can be controlled/programmed at the wall thermostat, but what is the point in installing WiFi enabled/capable thermostat if that feature/functionality is not enabled? I literally just installed a second Honeywell RTH6500 Wi-Fi Series myself on the lower level of my home today. I have both thermostats set to AUTO select between heat/cool systems, which is GREAT, when is can be 40 degrees in the a.m. and almost 90 in the afternoon -- I live on the Texas Gulf Coast. I LOVE this feature, and the fact that I can temporarily change the settings with my phone app from anywhere at any time. The app will also alert me IF the temperatures go up or down outside what is programmed/scheduled into the systems, indicating power or system failure.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hi GrayGoose! Thank you for reaching us out. If you wish to control your thermostat remotely form our App or website, the thermostat will require to be connected to a Wi-Fi network. You may also use the thermostat manually without Wi-Fi. We recommend to verify the installation, all of our Wi-Fi thermostats require a "C" or common wire to provide a constant 24 VAC power supply. To be sure that thermostat will be compatible, you require that C wire. Please, don't hesitate and contact us at 1-855-733-5465, reference case #00894637. It will be our pleasure to assist you with any questions you may have. Thank you!
