• It certainly is not water proof so being in the rain would be a bad choice. Also doesn't really provide a high volume of air flow, so in an unenclosed area may not provide much help unless you are pretty close to it.

• I don't see why you couldn't use it on a patio on a hot day, but not to be left out side, I'd choose a steel blade fan for out door use
