“Does the controller work by itself? Like as if you had one or two joy-cons separate from the tablet. I was wondering if you could connect the two halves together and use as a single handheld wireless controller for tabletop or desktop mode.”

• No, these only work connected to the switch, these dont have individual batteries like joycons.

• No, unfortunately they do not function put together like a standard controller. They do not charge either, they run off of your Switch battery, and they are ultra comfortable and responsive.
