“The instant ink feature ... does it only send ink when you need it ? I don’t print much at home and would need a minimal amount of ink, especially color ink. If it sends me a cartridge or more a month that would be too much for me.”

No-it sends ink when the printer notifies us that it's low on one or both cartridges. I'm on the Instant Ink plan, and I got quite a few months before getting replacement cartridges.
