“Do I have to "install" this printer for its use just as a copier? Or can I just plug it in and use the copy function?”

• I just plugged mine in and it worked out of the box but I had an HP so all the app was on my phone and iPad. Copy function works very well. My paper jammed up a couple times but I’m attributing that to using really cheap paper.
