• I think you need both cartridges installed but you can choose to only print with black

• Hi Charlie, thank you for the question. You can remove the color cartridge to print just black. We recommend replacing the color cartridge when you've completed your black print job, to avoid damaging the cartridge when it's not installed in the printer.
