From a customer viewpoint, it is a way for HP to monitor ink needs over the Internet and when your low, they automatically send you new HP cartridges. It is cheaper until you exceed your limit of pages printed in a month. Then it is more expensive. Unused pages in a month roll over to the next month. You can buy your own, but they must be HP cartridges as printer checks. For me this works well.
