• Yes, it can. In fact, once the color runs out you can pull the cartridge and the printer will switch to "single cartridge mode" and will continue to print without reminding you that you have an empty tri-color cartridge in the printer.

• Yes. Since they’re two separate cartridges, it shouldn’t pose a problem. Plus, on the print set up page, you can choose black and white or color, so if your color cartridge is dry, change it to b&w.
