• You set the print option from the software program. Find the Properties or Preferences tab after you click on the printer driver setup window/icon and select “open”. Click the option that is grayscale/ not color and click OK,apply. This should set print jobs from Word, Excel, webpages etc. to print only in black & white until you select otherwise. (P.S. The manual to this printer can be retrieved online.)

• The previous answer from HP is incorrect and/or misleading. You cannot change the default to black and white. I have tried every setting on my MacBook and every setting available on the printer web page that comes up for config. They seem to have purposefully made it impossible to default the black and white checkbox so you buy more color ink.
