Jan 20, 2018 I bought this machine today. I asked a BB supervisor and the HP rep this exact question because I read it here. The HP rep said no. Supervisor tested printing capabilities with cartridge removed. It did not print black.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, this will print black even if the color cartridges are depleted or not installed.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, the printer will print in black even if the color cartridge indicators show that you need to replace them. A working Black cartridge is also needed for the MFP to send a FAX, and print the "FAX Confirmation" page. I do not know if you can receive a FAX without a working Black cartridge. You should keep the nearly empty cartridges in the printer as they have a chip (integrated circuit, not potato chip) in them that makes electrical contact with the printer. It is possible that eventually, you will have to purchase color printer cartridges. My cartridges have been "running on empty" for a while, but I set my computer to print in black, so as not to use up any more color. To be sure you can use the print and FAX functions, use only the $120 genuine HP Cartridge 202x ( CF500X ) for the M281 Multi Function Printer (MFP) I purchased some non-HP printer cartridges from Amazon from a well reviewed manufacturer. Unfortunately, neither the Black, or the three color cartridges were rejected by the HP printer and give me the "Supply Memory Error." The HP Printer is designed to accept only Genuine HP cartridges, or those aftermarket cartridges that are build with the correct, up-to-date, chip inside.
