Instant Ink does not lock up your printer if you are not enrolled in the service. If you elect to ignore the prompts to enroll, the cartridges will work no differently than the ones you buy in store. If you want to enroll in Instant Ink, then we'll take care of your ink management, and all you worry about is the cost of your plan. The only time that your printer runs the potential of being "locked up" is if we cannot verify payment (in which case you would need to update payment information, and then you can resume printing), or if you cancel the program (in which you would need to replace the Instant Ink cartridges with traditional ink cartridges bought in store).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is not true. I have made all my payments and I have never received one cartridge in the entire year that I have been paying these monthly fees. Once I canceled my account my printer refuses to print anything until I register my account with insta ink. I contacted customer support and had zero resolution.
